I’ve heard some rumblings that with Renault-Nissan’s acquisition of Mitsubishi, we could, maybe, possibly see Renaults come back to the U.S. using the Mitsubishi dealer network. As a Le Car owner, I think it would be great. I’ll take a Clio RS. Ghosn doesn’t say anything specific in this article, but he does mention the partnership will be “significant” for Mitsubishi and Renault.

I mean, the last time Renault partnered with a struggling automaker over here, it worked out great, right? Vive La France!

While I wouldn’t necessarily buy one, I think more options is always better for the consumer.

I’d like to see it, but without too much Mitsubishi influence. If Renault coming back means we get the proposed Alpine though, I don’t care how it happens, it needs to.

Yeah, I’d like proper Renaults sold here with the single diamond badge, no non-French modifications. I’ll even take them if they’re called Mitsubishis, I guess, since I’ll know in my heart their true origins. Actually, the Alpine would work as a new 3000GT. I’d love to see that car on American streets.

Having worked on a few 3000GTs, I cannot support the use of that name or own anything with a Mitsubishi badge (other than a proper Montero, maybe). Anything else is fine.  Really, anything. I would rather the car be called the Alpinestars Merde Escargot Cheeseburger 300 than 3000GT.

It’s so pretty. Euro wagons are all pretty awesome (Mondeo, 6, Superb, Insignia)

Haha. Totally. I had a boxy Montero in high school. That thing was the pinnacle of Mitsubishis in America other than the Evo, I guess. I do like their old Minica kei car. Escargot Cheeseburger might be my new band name.

Nah.

I want that to happen as much as you, but you know it won’t. Assuming the Renault thing actually happens, you can count on a crossover thing wearing it’s name and nothing else before hitting the US.

I know, it’ll be the same if VW ever brings Škoda over too.

With Renault-Nissan’s platform sharing, we essentially get them already, just with different sheet metal.

However, Mitsubishi has been looking for a partner to build cars for them for a while now - they want to replace the Lancer and get back in the midsize game and can’t afford to do it themselves.

The one complication in that is that Renault already stopped them from doing just that, when they blocked Mitsubishi’s plans to import and rebadge Samsungs so as not to compete with Nissan. Of course, that was before they were a Mitsubishi shareholder, so who knows.

And all this while Renault is resurrecting... Alpine! I’m happy for you! And finally some Oppo posts on...

Oh, man. I can’t wait to see an Alpine on these shores. I’d also take a Twingo GT. We’ll see what happens. I’m not going to hold my breath, but we really could use a French revolution over here. Yeah, Oppo needs more French.

Or a true Clio Gordini... It’s about time! Maybe we should contact Carlos Ghosn about some of our ideas for a decent marketing campaign!

We should absolutely be in charge of Renault’s marketing. Nobody knows how to market a car better than us especially if it’s a French car. Do they still have the Clio and Twingo Gordinis? Those should be much better especially since they’re bringing back Alpine. Also, why not a Matra division as well? Actually, maybe they should just rename Mitsubishi Matra. I’d love to visit my local Matra-Renault dealer.

There’s no current Gordini. Maybe there’s some local importer with some Gordini package but not from the factory. Most hardcore is probably the Clio R.S. Trophy .

Not sure about the Matra division. Wouldn’t it be historically more correct to connect that to PSA?

Maybe they’ll do an Alpine Gordini. That would be cool.

Well, I was thinking the last Matra was a Renault, so it would be continuing on from there.

Yes, the Espace. But I’d prefer the sporty ones. Sporty Renaults came from Dieppe. An Alpine Gordini would crush the competition!

We all prefer the sporty ones even though the Espace is pretty cool. Who owns the Matra name now?

As it was acquired by Lagardère one would suspect they’d own the name. Lagardère you probably only know of by their Hachette subbrand. Then again: they’re in media so you might know them otherwise.

The defense-arm is owned by Aerospatiale so they may have rights on that name as well.

After the demise of the Renault Avantime, Matra sadly closed their automotive factory. Also, the most recent Gordini models were literally just an appearance package for the Renaultsport versions of the the Clio and and Twingo (though they still look pretty cool).

I’m just as excited for the new Alpine as you are too though, even if it may be a while before they come up with something. This looks pretty amusing though: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/alpine-suv-follow-sports-car . I also believe it started out as joint venture between Caterham and Alpine, though it’s split up now and Caterham’s making their own new sports car.

They’re still making leaps and bounds of progress though, looking forward to seeing what Renault has in store.

Jeez, of course they’ll make an Alpine SUV. As long as we get the sports car, I guess that’s fine.
